Staff profile: Guy Collender

Guy Collender, Communications Manager, External Relations, joined Birkbeck in March this year.

A former journalist, he has also worked for the last seven years in a variety of communications and press office roles, most recently at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Guy has a BA in Modern History from Oxford University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Newspaper Journalism from Cardiff University.

His career began as a reporter at The News (Portsmouth’s daily newspaper) before he pursued his interest in international development by gaining an MSc in Population and Development from LSE.

He spent two years working at the Media Monitoring Unit, part of the UK Civil Service, before his first job in the higher education sector as a communications officer at the Institute of Development Studies, part of the University of Sussex.

In 2008 Guy joined the London International Development Centre – an interdisciplinary collaboration between the six Bloomsbury Colleges, including Birkbeck. This marked the beginning of his interest in, and familiarity with, Birkbeck’s research and activities.

At Birkbeck, Guy will be leading the activities of the Press Office, including promoting research from across Birkbeck’s Schools to staff, students, alumni, and the media. His role will include communicating via a variety of channels, including print, podcasts and social media.

Guy said: “I never cease to be amazed by the breadth of Birkbeck’s research and the range of inspiring student stories. I’m really looking forward to spreading the word about Birkbeck’s activities, and using new ways to reach new audiences, particularly online. I’m excited to be part of a dynamic team, and I really appreciate the welcome I’ve already received.”
